The hardest part of a basement problem is not fixing it. It is knowing what you are looking at. What we are checking for

We walk the whole basement and read it as one picture. On the structural side we measure any bowing, cracking, or settlement to judge whether the wall is still moving. On the water side we trace where it is getting in, at the cove joint, through a crack, or up through the slab, and what is pushing it. In the Miami Valley the same clay soil and freeze-thaw often drive both at once, which is why we never look at just one.

Why the two get confused

A leaking crack and a structural crack can sit inches apart on the same wall and mean very different things. One needs sealing against water; the other means the wall is under load and needs stabilizing. Guess wrong and you either waterproof a wall that is failing or brace a wall that only ever needed to be dry. We sort that out first, before anyone talks about a repair.
